Internship at English American Tailoring

Summer 2025 | Westminster, Maryland

During the summer of 2025, I interned at English American Tailoring, one of the few remaining U.S.-based manufacturers of high-quality men's and women's custom suiting. As a fashion design major with growing interest in the business and production side of the industry, this experience gave me invaluable, behind-the-scenes insight into how fine garments are actually made at scale.

Over the course of the internship, I had the opportunity to rotate through multiple departments, from the cutting floor to the pant and coat shops — learning hands-on about industrial equipment, garment construction, quality control, and how a highly collaborative workforce brings complex custom orders to life. I shadowed and worked alongside skilled operators, supervisors, and CAD specialists, many of whom took time to teach me directly or allow me to try certain steps myself, including sewing part of my custom pant and coat.

In addition to the day-to-day work, I created a detailed documentation project outlining each department’s role in the tailoring process. This final report combined technical observations, photos, and process breakdowns — and now serves as both a learning tool for future interns and a portfolio piece that showcases my attention to detail, visual communication skills, and understanding of apparel manufacturing.

The relationships I built during this internship were just as valuable as the technical experience. I'm incredibly grateful to everyone at English American Tailoring who welcomed me, supported my learning, and made this summer so meaningful.
